Butterflies are Free

Here's a BLOCK of butterflies (sort of) which is the theme for Marie's Postcard Friendly Friday theme this week. Well, her theme is WRITER'S block, but I've just picked up my pc after having a tune-up done, and I'm not really prepared for putting up a story to go with this one.

I do remember deciding to try using something other than peace symbols as part of the envelope design and lettering.

And where was I? About fifteen miles North of Danang, in what was then South Vietnam. It was raining today (when I wrote the letter that was inside the envelope), and I wasn't getting a lot of sleep. The only thing that was free for me was the butterflies.

  1. I love the butterfly pattern. Was "skinny legs" a reference to the Tom Robbins novel?

  4. What a flutterby coincidence. I'm listening to Madame Butterfly right now. Puccini, red wine and old paper are a wonderful combination:)

  5. Dave,
I really think you should do a book of all your envelopes. We can say we knew you when...

  8. I don't know if I ever told you that I lost my nephew there in Vietnam. He was an MP and stepped on a land mine along a fence he was walking along. I think it broke every bone in his body and he was much shorter at the viewing than he was when he left home. Wow. I don't know what war is all about and none of them has made much sense to me. I must say though that I admire your art on this envelope design. Did you get free postage there? We never did but it was after a different war. Korean and I was then in Japan when I wrote all or most of my letters.

  9. Letters were free. Packages had to be opened when presented for sending home before sealing for transport. I don't remember ever sending any packages home. It was a war zone concession to the military.

  14. Lovely butterfly. I have a butterfly tattooed on my right shoulder.

Thank you for the advise about the sticker and it came off so nice and easy I just had to find something to slide under it since I couldn't use one of my fingernails. See they are polished with a dark color and sometimes dark colors rub off.

I had to delete my comment because it had a typo in it.
