Butterflies are Free
Here's a BLOCK of butterflies (sort of) which is the theme for Marie's Postcard Friendly Friday theme this week. Well, her theme is WRITER'S block, but I've just picked up my pc after having a tune-up done, and I'm not really prepared for putting up a story to go with this one.
I do remember deciding to try using something other than peace symbols as part of the envelope design and lettering.
And where was I? About fifteen miles North of Danang, in what was then South Vietnam. It was raining today (when I wrote the letter that was inside the envelope), and I wasn't getting a lot of sleep. The only thing that was free for me was the butterflies.

Do not break the butterflies?
ReplyDeleteI love the butterfly pattern. Was "skinny legs" a reference to the Tom Robbins novel?
ReplyDeleteHow neat, love the butterflies. Happy PFF
ReplyDeleteDave,
ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful! Happy PFF!
What a flutterby coincidence. I'm listening to Madame Butterfly right now. Puccini, red wine and old paper are a wonderful combination:)
ReplyDeleteDave,
ReplyDeleteI really think you should do a book of all your envelopes. We can say we knew you when...
Beautiful images can come from difficult times. Sleep well now.
ReplyDeleteLove your lettering ... so unique !
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I ever told you that I lost my nephew there in Vietnam. He was an MP and stepped on a land mine along a fence he was walking along. I think it broke every bone in his body and he was much shorter at the viewing than he was when he left home. Wow. I don't know what war is all about and none of them has made much sense to me. I must say though that I admire your art on this envelope design. Did you get free postage there? We never did but it was after a different war. Korean and I was then in Japan when I wrote all or most of my letters.
ReplyDeleteLetters were free. Packages had to be opened when presented for sending home before sealing for transport. I don't remember ever sending any packages home. It was a war zone concession to the military.
ReplyDeleteHappy to be your 50th follower! Thanks for checking out my blog and sharing your love of art.

That is really really cool. The colors are phenomenal!
ReplyDeleteIt must have been fun looking forward to receiving these envelopes in the mail! Happy PFF!

ReplyDeleteLovely butterfly. I have a butterfly tattooed on my right shoulder.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the advise about the sticker and it came off so nice and easy I just had to find something to slide under it since I couldn't use one of my fingernails. See they are polished with a dark color and sometimes dark colors rub off.
I had to delete my comment because it had a typo in it.
Love your work! I agree with Christine above, you should do a book. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteWho or what had "skinny legs and all" ? LOL!
ReplyDeleteExcellent stuff man! I support the book idea. Maybe a self-publishing house?
