PFF #11 First Date

Marie's idea of a theme this week is MAIL Babies. My contribution predates the baby delivery thing by more than 9 months, or at least it should. I actually decided to post this one after looking at the Tattered and Lost EPHEMERA blog all week, looking at early illustration advertisements for Coca-Cola.

This one was a lot of fun, although I chose early Fifties for the time period, I remember the Rockola booth Jukebox selectors from the Snack Shack in my hometown when it came time to do this cover. The title was also a play on words, since the Love stamp First Day of issue was the reason I did this in the first place.

And that's two paper straws and a single cherry in a cool, refreshing glass of ice cold Coca-Cola. Who gets the Cherry?

  1. I've heard of cherry coke but not cherry in a coke.

  2. Mmmm, the fizzies in your Coke illustration are making me salivate. There's nothing like the taste of an icy Coke on a hot day.

  3. It's wonderful! Put that glass next to that old bottle illustration and I'm longing for an old fashioned pre-corn syrup coke. Very very nice!

  4. When I was growing up in the fifties/sixties, there was always a maraschino cherry served with your Pepsi. I say Pepsi because although we have Coke, Quebec is the only place in the world where Pepsi consistently beats Coke as the cola of choice.

  5. I love this one. It reminds me so much of a coke blotter I got. My friend gave me, one day, a brand new coke ink blotter. It was one the company gave to all country school kids because in those days we all used dip pens and ink from the bottle. This one was never used and goes back to the early 1940s.

    To answer your question...

My kids, and those you saw laughing, have a ball when they all get together. Or when the son if up from Florida and they all get together. I should say, as he doesn't get up more than once a year.

  10. DD + TV 1955 ??? You had your first date at age seven? Precocious, both of you -:)

My memory tells me fountain Cokes were tastier than those from the bottles. And cherry Coke was right up there at the top of my list. Like reading a good book and wishing it wouldn't end, I always had the same feeling when nursing a glass of Coke from the fountain.

    Fun cover!

  11. Yaw, well Chuck - in '55 I was about as tall as the eye-level view portrayed on the cover. I had to throw in a little something personal, didn't I? As for the music on the Juke box, I do remember each and every tune, and can probably even give you the lyrics. Ask Penny if she doesn't remember them. By the way, Terri was five in '55. Precocious indeed.

  15. I'm officially snagging that cherry! There's no sharing when it comes to coke flavored Maraschinos! The word love stamp has me humming the song love shack now! Please save me from these B-52 flashbacks!

I'm glad that you don't mind my very random history tidbits:) I found a good picture of that pygmy elephant skull and reposted it! You should go take a gander! It's cyclops to the 10th power!

  16. The fountain Cokes were better before. What's odd is that, now that soda fountains are standardized, a Coke doesn't taste the same from one place to another. I've switched to glass-bottle Cokes.

  17. Wonderful postcard! Happy PFF a little late. (grin)

  18. Dave, of all your covers, this is one of my very favorites. My palm gets moist just seeing your frosty glass, I adore the striped straws, my tongue is teased by the busy, fizzy feel of fountain-strength Coca-Cola, and yes, the songs begin playing in my head. Speaking of recalling all the lyrics, I saw a piece on the news last week that the lyric memory principle has been utilized in a curriculum to aid learning in school children--to phenomenal success. Fascinating how the human brain works. Kudos, Big Brother. You're the best!!! I'd let you have the cherry on top :-)

  19. Great illustration. I am not a soda drinker but this one almost makes me want to quench my thirst with a coke!
