GINGER, ZNAPPY!

We had a Cracker Factory in Helena. As a matter of fact, we had more than one. The National Biscuit Company, now known as Nabisco, filled an order for the C. W. Rank & Company Mercantile in Virginia City, Montana, in late November of 1899. Included on this order were Zu Zu Ginger Snaps. You can see that line item just above the first 'Zu' on the face of the box that Zu Zu is sitting on. I found this nice advertisement for Zu Zu Ginger Snaps on the web.

Zo... Deliver Zome Zu Zu'z and make it Znappy!!! And let it Rain, of course - they were packaged in the famous waxed paper In-er-seal!

  2. Seth,

There are some who'll find my 'alterations' to be destroying the value of the paper itself, but in most cases - I'm not. I'll not use any paper that has historical value or significance for my artwork, but I generally choose my paper very carefully. I'm always looking for textual hooks to hang my visual fish on, and in this particular case - I simply couldn't find advertising or packaging for any of the products National sold via this billhead, so I went with a product that was a slam dunk for popularity.

  4. I never heard of most of these things but bingo for today. I recognize Nabisco. I also got a bar of Lye soap from a local hardware or my daughter did. I really like that soap and grew up washing with the same lye soap except my mother made it with wood ashes, lye and lard or meat fryings.

    Nice post.

  5. Quite a colorful and intriguing logo; seems like this era had a penchant for fun.

    ZuZu Snaps never get soggy,
    Not when it rains,
    And never on your bloggy.

    Keep it coming!

  6. How VERY beautiful!

I'm sorry I am coming by so late for Postcard Friendship Friday. My parents were involved in a roll-over accident on the freeway last Monday. Miraculously both of my dear parents survived and are recovering, leaving little time for blogging. I had a few minutes just now, though, so here I am.

    Happy PFF!
